A number of unique spaces have been pedestrianised in this same area: from 1976 to 1979 "Ante Starcevic" Square (previously used as a haphazard parking zone) where cafés shops and other commercial services have been built.. The square has been enriched by the sculpture "People" (a work by the Croatian sculptor B. Ruzic) and a fountain.. It is equipped with swimming pools a riverside beach football pitches basketball and volleyball courts (the latter on the sand).. This recreational space covers a site of 10 hectares where there were previously fields with army barrack huts and warehouses

Barrack Street to the Narrows Bridge.. Dr Lawrence was replaced by Richard Court who didn't like the cable car and eventually produced an even more modest proposal to redevelop Barrack Square with the centrepiece being a tower to house some bells that had been donated to the State.. At one stage he wanted to sink Riverside Drive but that plan vanished without trace..Wagyl - there's every chance some new premier will be putting a new vision forward and we'll be back to square one

Riverside Drive would be redirected around a new inlet and the Esplanade train station will get a nearby ferry terminal under city redevelopment plans to be unveiled at the weekend..Square in Melbourne
