Re: American School System

who hasn't but what about when the second comes back from college with a degree in engineering or physics? What's preventing the first from attending college as well? Quote: Quote: Quote: Arts schools are another option but they shouldn't ignore the important subjects as mentioned above.. Who knows what sort of career a graduate from an arts school might pursue? Vocational schools would be optional compared to the standard high school and no where did I mention art schools.. Also I was just trying to keep the artsy people off my back as three of my siblings graduated from or are attending an arts school.. So if you have these students who aren't in school and you have an economy which is rather unfavorable for teens what do you do with all these kids? Are you assuming no other schools would be started? I guarantee you people will be jumping at the opportunity to make money on schooling.. And what to do with the kids? Same thing we do with the lazy teenagers who do nothing after high school now

Re: atl school days longer and no school on fridays

I am not against lengthening the day by even say 30-40 mins and doing a 4 day week but I think 98 mins is going to be detrimental to our kids (maybe not the older kids as much as K-6) the study I posted before the district in the UP had issues with the kids being exhausted and they were only going from 8am-4pm I have emailed the superintendent of Stephenson area public school for a little more.. We would love to go back to the days of central stops but for us it is too much of a risk to the safety of our kids." We have been looking for other ways to try and save money for the school (with out cutting jobs sport or band) and we emailed Mrs
Re: atl school days longer and no school on fridays

The kids that are going to have trouble with this are the ones who's parents are nay-saying about it from the rooftops.. I feel for your kids cause you are not even giving them the chance to try it out with an open mind and see what happens.. People keep complaining the kids will be in school 8 1/2 hours that it is longer than and adults work day

Re: Ginger guy from America tired of abuse from people (epic youtube)

Some have speculated that the dislike of red-hair may derive from the historical English sentiment that people of Irish or Celtic background with a greater prevalence of red hair were ethnically inferior.[51] Redheads are also sometimes referred to disparagingly as "carrot tops" and "carrot heads"..Ginger Kids" "Le Petit Tourette" and "Fatbeard" episodes of South Park.. Films and television programmes often portray school bullies as having red hair;[59] for example Scut Farkus from A Christmas Story or the O'Doyle family in the movie Billy Madison

Re: School Of Dark Magic (only accepting school staff)

As soon as Vincent was gone from her sight Vera let out a sigh and shook her head.. They couldnt have students wander around the school late at nights when nobody was around especially with this school.. So many books of dark magic that anything was possible to happen.. This was a school of teaching not some kids playground.. Turning around to go back down the hall where she had drop her memos at Vera suddenly stopped when she noticed the eerie green light and Dorian standing in the hall looking towards her

Re: What I want from Montessori - spinoff from Primary Math

If he continues to not choose work or not complete work then where is the motivation supposed to come from? I thought Montessori offered guidance to help the students on the right path if they didn't do it automatically or naturally..I would feel that way about any school program not just Montessori)

Re: Being the youngest. Re: holding kids back from K

Socially once he met and got used to the kids teachers and structure of the system then he is shining.. His major problem is that he isn't allowed to watch all the cartoons that most of the other kids are watching an so in recess he had a hard time finding a kid to play dinosours with rather than bakugan/star wars ect.. If I had kept him out of school for another year and put him in preschool he would still be very shy but stupidly bored too.. As a kid I started early and then the school moved the cut off day to one day before my birthday so I was held back in first.. As an adult I realise I should have never been held back and my mother should have stood up to the school and I will never do that to my children
Re: Being the youngest. Re: holding kids back from K

Most of them show that on a long term basis there is no discernible benefit to holding your child back. Having said that parents in our middle-class suburb seem about 50/50 on whether they send their summer/fall birthday kids to K (our district cut-off is 10/15).. I come from a whole family of educators and while some of them say it can be beneficial for specific kids to be held out they also say that most kids end up where they would have been anyway (based on their root cognitive abilities) by 3rd or 4th grade.. High High School College).. I guess I understand where people are coming from but I graduated from high school at 17 and college at 21 and I never had a problem socially
Re: Being the youngest. Re: holding kids back from K

post14990599] As a kid I started early and then the school moved the cut off day to one day before my birthday so I was held back in first.. I went through school socially ahead and uncomfortable all the other kids were interested in dolls and I had grown out of that.. As an adult I realise I should have never been held back and my mother should have stood up to the school and I will never do that to my children.. I had a very similar experience though it involved moving from on state to another

Re: am I naive to think the I can prevent my kids from having a "boy/girlfriend"

If you want to use peer pressure to your advantage you need to be thinking about what sort of environment would include peers who are from families with the same values that you have.. A couple of my friends sent their daughters to a girls' high school. The girls simply did not date.. They focused on academics more easily because there were no romantic distractions at school. They formed closer friendships because they weren't fighting over boys.. You don't really think that kids going out in middle school or even having sex in middle school is a new phenomenon do you? Way back in the dark ages when I was in late elementary school/junior high there were girls that got pregnant.. There were plenty of kids that were making out in the back of the school bus in elementary school even

Re: am I naive to think the I can prevent my kids from having a "boy/girlfriend"

post12767089] I know I can't stop them from having crushes or feelings for others. That's a given. My kids are so young though 6 and 3 so I have a while before we even get to that point.. I guess all I want for my kids is to be able to talk to us about anything but to raise them to make good decisions.. I can see later in highschool but not in middle school. That's all I'm saying

Re: Homeschoolers Moving from ID back to CA...can any homeschoolers please answer my question?

I never received a reply or any correspondence from the state and my son is now in a charter school that has a homeschool program and I just enrolled him in this program so no need to renew the personal affadavit.. 2)Use an online school that has a curriculum.. You enroll thru them they file the paperwork and obviously there is quite a range of curriculum/types of programs: montessori waldorf classical back to basics etc etc etc Do a search;you are NOT restricted to CA schools for this since it's online and in most cases you don't even submit homework or assignments you just enroll thru the school.. Obviously you can do extra beyond the curriculum and most homeschooled kids do.. It's a large community-and you can find everything from unschooling to christian homeschooling to waldorf homeschool groups

Re: Virtual school dilemna (we want out but guilt holds me back)

At this age everything else is kind of secondary to getting the speech and the fine-motor skills where they need to be YKWIM? For your other kids - you say you don't have time to lesson-plan but how much time do you actually spend right now dealing with the charter school's nonsense? I personally cannot wait to be free of their scheduling and their busywork -and as charter schools go my state's..K12 school is a very low-intervention setup.. My older kids can manage pretty well on their own but it still is demanding.. I think they are then "exempt" from having to offer speech.. We have stacks of reports from professionals stating their opinion of him needing to be "in school" with LOTS of structure
Re: Virtual school dilemna (we want out but guilt holds me back)

post15017977] Oh my! I had our meeting today with the kids' teacher through K12. It did NOT go well.. She has always wanted to help...but I think the k12 public school teacher in her is sort of shaping her view of homeschooling.. She told me that they should all be doing school at the table at the same time....from 9-1 or 2pm
Re: Virtual school dilemna (we want out but guilt holds me back)

post15017977] Then she went on to say that she's concerned that DD10 is falling behind. She told me that they should all be doing school at the table at the same time....from 9-1 or 2pm.. They should just know they have to get school done before anything else and that during that time it's school time.. So...how do YOU feel? what is YOUR opinion on the quotes I have here? Do YOU think that the educational experience you want your kids to have is sitting at a table for 6 hours not getting up or moving and just focusing in on their work and doing it because it's school and it has to be done? Again if that is the vision you have for what you WANT homeschooling to look like for you thats

Re: Taking kids back to the UK - when is the best age?

School and College....but then our home did not sell...what I did do was fax our youngest sons current school work over to the High School and I can honestly say that they were soooo good....IF our son was going to have any problems they had all the "back up" ready to help...and he was a straight A student here in Years 8 and 9....it all changes though in year 11 and 12...that is when the only really hard work starts (a teacher here said to us that until then education here has been very easy for.. That means I ve only got 7 weeks left in Oz! Lot s to organise! As hard as this will for us as a family it will give me the chance to get the kids into school for the last term of the UK school year and which will hopefully help prepare the eldest a bit more for the start of GCSE s in September.. Have had a positive response from a good grammar school in the area with her results and report but they cannot officially offer us a place until we are in the country and have a permanent address
Re: Taking kids back to the UK - when is the best age?

post8302713] Hi everyone Would appreciate any advice on the best time to take kids back to the UK re: education system? (not sure if it matters much....but we are currently in the US).. aged 9 and 11 this year) Option 2 - leave it a little longer and place them in secondary school in S1 and S3 (i.e.. Hi The Undecided Scot We made the decision to return to the UK when our sons were 9 & 11 years old in 2005(from Canada) as it would allow them to get in the UK secondary school system.. The only comment from them is that in England you were expected to work much harder and do more subjects earlier than their school in Ontario.. Schools in the UK do have a lot of support for kids that need extra help
Re: Taking kids back to the UK - when is the best age?

The girls are all back in their old school and thriving.. It's good to hear that the schools in the UK will be able to support the kids if they need to catch up at all.. It's great that your daughters school is flexible enough to allow her to use the book she studied in Oz

Re: Potential move from DC area back to PGH opinions

McCandless is extremely convenient to Shadyside Academy and the Winchester Thurston School in Hampton.. If they're all middle school or older proximity to Fox Chapel for Shadyside Academy could come into play.. Just being logical there although the reality is maybe the kids wouldn't even all go to the same school.. Children who attend the top three private high schools commute from all over the county

My area in rockville is not the best in the county.. Additionally at the local elementry school classes are taught in trailers due to the over crowding here.. of kids here where english is a 2nd language.. I'm a former Baltimore County teacher and went to the best high school in that county..it really depends on what you want for your kids. I was thinking of the number of AP courses offered and the number of kids attending prestigious colleges which might not matter to you either

But as some of our friends with older kids who have gone through all this already pointed out by high school a lot of the kids carpool so their advice was to focus on being closer for K-8. Interesting
