From SP you could easily access the beach resorts such as Ubatuba or for yet another colonial experience but a very stylish one go to Paraty on the coast between SP and Rio.. As for hotels weekends give excellent rates in many cities - though not Rio! But for these discounts try Brasilian hotels or brands rather than international chains

Some recommendations: 1. If you would like to stay in Rio area I would recommend Buzios Angra dos Reis or colonial Paraty. They are towns located about 3h drive from Rio where you have stunning beaches and small towns with all service you need.. This is an island in South Brazil (2h flight with GOL or TAM nonstop) it is a favourite with Brazilians and Argentinians which pack the city in the Summer.. FLN also has the best-rated resort in Brazil: Costao do Santinho but its location is far from downtown

By: FormerlyHistoryStudent Rio. Seems like you found a real gem it doesn't seem so well known about but the reviews I've read of it have all been positive.. I've booked 5 nights also in the Blue jungle hostel in Paraty which looks lovely with a swimming pool and views onto the beach and rainforest and 2 nights in a well rated pousada on the Brazlian side of Iguazzu

I'd love to see your blog! Could I please have a link? Which hostels did you stay (and would you recommend) in Iguassu Paraty and Ilha Grande? There seem to be so many options and mixed reviews! Yes I love fruit and juice especially in the tropics again i'm a little bit worried about cheap vegetarian food though i checked happycow.net and there are a number of veggie/vegan restaurants.. Oh my god is it bad that I can't wait for June and it's only January? I'm afraid I'm not any use for hostel recommendations anywhere but Rio in Brazil because after that I was with the tour group which stayed in hotels rather than hostels.. The blog link is http://blogs.statravel.co.uk/lucyanddave [http://blogs.statravel.co.uk/lucyanddave] - have a look at the three Rio photo albums on there as well as the text The cheapest vegetarian food you can get will be from the supermarkets to be honest and street stalls but if you want to eat out on a reasonable budget then go to a Kilo restaurant (there's lots all over Rio)

My favourite place in the whole wide world: Paraty (Brazil) (PIC [http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0RS3lJdar44/Sa4h9S7JPcI/AAAAAAAAAfM/xO6G76znJIc/s1600-h/Parati.jpg]) More stunning places in Brazil: Foz do Iguacu (I'm partial to the Brazilian side) more 'majestic' but you do get closer to the falls in the Argentinian.. Trancoso in Bahia - ah paradise! Coast of Rio (Ilha Grande Parati) - so idyllic Also love: *Marais in Paris (agree with illegallyblonde ) love the little lanes/stores/patisseries/cafes *Venice Italy
