Does any one know how far it is from the HAL port in Tauranga to Te Puia? Are taxis reasonable ? Is there a bus from the port that has a ROUTE to Te Puia? Ann Kia ora Driving by car it usually takes just under an hour from the port at Mt.. Maunganui to Rotorua. There are buses running between Rotorua & Tauranga but I don't really think it would be a viable option for a cruise passenger & as mentioned a taxi would be expensive unless you were able to share the cost

Cheers Kia ora i Rotorua We have just returned from Wellington & read these postings.. As a cruiser who actually lives in Rotorua I would like to say that Te Puia is not government run.. Te Puia evolved from the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute is situated adjacent to Whakarewarewa and is staffed by locals

post21913707] We will be visiting Tauranga with a cruse ship and we will be renting a car. We would like to drive to Rotorua and visit one of the Maori villages with a cultural performance.. The inhabitants of 'Whaka' have been guiding visitors since the government first established a tourism town in Rotorua. Tamaki is a stage managed experience - albeit a very good one.. Te Puia is like a huge tourism sausage machine..

Now if you're in Tauranga you should most definitely take in the centre for the Maori culture in Aoteroa (New Zealand) that being Rotorua. In Rotorua Te Papa is a great experience and an actual marae where you will be welcomed onto the Marae by a wero (warriuor challenge) and the karanga (singing) of the Maori women of the iwi (tribe)/whenua (extended family) of the local community

post21603254] Kia ora I have just returned from soaking in my favourite natural hot pool at one of our lakes in the region. Rotorua is just under an hours drive from the port at Mount Maunganui.. Te Papa is the national museum in Wellington! Like some museum here it has a marae whereas in Rotorua you can see the real thing! Marae are all over the place and you can visit and be welcomed onto the one at Whakarewarewa a 'living' Maori settlement situated in the midst of one of the geo-thermal areas here (see www.whakarewarewa.com [http://www.whakarewarewa.. Aquarians Thanks Aquarians...Blew that one didn't I. I meant to say Te Puia in Rotorua

Kia Ora Aquarians. Was hoping you'd pop up again here as I'd seen your previous posts. Am going to be visiting Rotorua for 3 nights prior to my cruise this upcoming March and was wondering if you could give me a bit of input on my plans? Flying in direct to Rotorua from Sydney on the new non-stop flight.. The other day is more for Maori culture going to Whaka and Te Puia with the Matai Hangi and cultural performance/evening bush walk that evening

Enjoy the North Island but if you didn't do Tauranga/Rotorua from the ship you should definitely do Te Puia in Rotorua (a worthwhile and culturally enriching experience of our Maori brothers and sisters of Aotearoa)

Don't know where Des takes you on the Tauranga tour but if it includes Te Puia marae and geo-thermal hotsprings in Rotorua you will have the opportunity to experience a "powhiri" and "wero" the welcome of pakeha (us whitefolks) and a concert of Maori music as well as the opportunity to explore the multi-hued
