post3999691] I remember in an earlier post you made a comment along the lines that atheism presents a reality too harsh for most people to face (sorry I don't have the energy to go find it.) Even if you didn't say it I am saying it- I think this is true

Just the mere fact that you feel you have a better grip on reality would make someone want to be an atheist.. If you're going to go through the sad trouble to read the bible critically as a work of fiction you should start at least start with a good school of critical thought

some can show you how there are scriptures that can be interpreted to show dinos lived with humans during the bible days.. so in that case evolution doesn't make any more sense then the bible. its two different takes on what is being observed via fossiles historical documents regarding the bible and people in it to be true etc.. science is not the antithesis of god or belief in god it is a neutral method by which understanding about reality is achieved most reliably

(OH MY THATS IMPOSSIBLE thats completed BULLLLL? or is it) Quote: Among critics of the Bible there are few stories discussed more often than that of Jonah and the great fish (Jonah 1:17).. This account has been ridiculed perhaps as frequently as any in the Bible. It is too difficult critics allege to believe that a man could be swallowed by such a fish and then emerge alive and well three days later.. In reality however the problem with this account is not the fact that a fish could swallow a man

S1: What is appropriate criteria for the reality? = That it be testable and demonsterably real.. Many christians that know the bible backwards and forwards are quite ignorant of anything that really matters.. Sadly the same can be said of people who study the Koran! My extent of study of the koran is identical to my study of the bible.. Once you understand that it is mythology no further study is necessary

An example that might have some relevance: I remember that when I was at primary school aged about 10 we were told Bible stories about things like the flood Jericho and the contest on Mount Carmel where the Bible says Elijah ended up killing the prophets of Baal

main tendencies of philosophy monism (the belief that all reality is essentially one thing) and positivism (the belief that we can have certain knowledge of nothing save fragmentary sense data).. Either brand of philosophy is false of course because meaning is not the same as reality. I can think of two trees as of one kind but still there are in reality two trees.. But the same God who wrote the Bible also packed many of the key numerical concepts of mathematics into the small equation e i(pi) = -1 and all the design specifications of the human body into a single molecule of DNA.. Reply: No accepted definition of science can be stretched so far as to cover any form of Bible study.. Interpreting the Bible according to a set of rules is less similar to science than to baking a cake with the help of a recipe or to filling out an income tax form

As Ramm notes "The divine inspiration of the Bible is the foundation of historic Protestant hermeneutics and exegesis." Bible Cultural Background Interpretation As mentioned earlier understanding and knowing the cultural backgrounds of the people contained in the books of the Bible is imperative.. In the Tyndale Theological Seminary and Biblical Institute's Hermeneutics course study notes Dr.. Mal Couch points out "study objectively not subjectively." It is important to not allow any preconceived conclusions to influence this vital step of interpretation

In the West the critical study of the Scriptures is something quite recent.. For hundreds of years people were content to accept the Bible-both Old and New Testaments-as it was.. The clergy were priviledged in that they were easily able to have a comprehensive knowledge of the Bible while the majority of laymen heard only selected readings as part of a sermon or the liturgy.. Raised to the level of a specialized study textual criticism has been valuable in uncovering and disseminating problems which are often very serious

Re: Hermeneutics - The Art of Interpreting the Bible Correctly

However it would be a grave error to conclude that all Scripture is obscure or that it requires years of study to adequately interpret it.. The Bible itself - directly and indirectly - proclaims that it is written in such a way that believers regardless of their education or mental acumen may read and understand its pages..Scripture is quite clear that we are all to read study and meditate upon God's Word (cf.. 1 Timothy 4:13 [http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=1+Timothy+4%3A13]; Proverbs 4:2 [http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=Proverbs+4%3A2]; Psalm 1:1-3 [http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=Psalm
