DH's company stock program we have some $ to do some home improvements and next week we're having an attic access ladder installed in the kitchen new insulation for the attic and a new light fixture put in the dining room.. We have a storage attic that we don't use because the only access to it is a little opening in the ceiling of our closet and you have to take down both hanging bars and get out a ladder to climb up there.. The firefighters were not amused by this when they had to get in there a year ago when we had leaves catch fire on our roof and they needed to check the inside of the attic to make sure the fire hadn't caused any damage there

The end result is that our square foot cost is in the neighborhood of 30% - 40% less than any other home in the neighborhood.. Our energy costs are probably only 1/4 of anything else in the neighborhood (with the exception of one other house I did there for a client)

Thanks for the warm welcome folk. I wonder if anybody can help with our first problem.. We are keen cyclists and currently have Thule cross bars and cycle carriers on the roof of our V70. We will be looking to install roof bars to the E92 so that we can fit some mountain bike carriers

Good idea to stay away from the guns LuDa. We've gone to Rio a couple times for New Year's fireworks on Copacabana Beach and every year when someone shoots a gun in the air the bullet always ends up coming back down and hitting someone.. The first year we went it was someone on our shuttle bus who ended up with a bullet in her leg.. This year I think we'll go up on the roof and watch the fireworks from Avenida Paulista.. I can take the elevator to the roof without fighting a crowd.

I'm going to get listing again (I know I know I say this all the time and never get to it) because our taxes are going to sink us.. Some of the state sales tax money that we need to pay got used to do silly things- like feed us and keep the roof over our heads

For instance the simple shed roof has no valleys or intersections at all essentially no place for a leak to occur.. I was determined to build a building for a surprisingly low cost that would be maintenance free not waste our valuable energy and yet still function exceedingly well as a place to live (for our family of six plus two dogs and a goofy cat)

Walls and carpet soaked with urine in our place when we moved in.. Everything was covered with new flat sand textured paint to hide the crappy drywall job they did and to cover the mold in the bathroom.. Roof started leaking around the chimney but was an easy fix

I even enjoy getting up early to drive my son to the station roof down even at this time of year.. All group activities and forums have their ups and downs with people falling out leaving new members joining and benefiting from the huge knowledge base here sometimes threads are not to everyone's taste but at least there is a lot of activity on this forum the banter is great a bit like being down the pub with your mates long may it continue

I think perhaps people are being a bit pessimistic here - the point is what NEW expenses will be incurred by owning rather than renting.. Now I have to replace my roof at a cost of about 3.5k.... Our buildings and contents insurance is done together we have just renewed and paid about 350 for the year this is for a 4-bed semi with a shed-load of valuable contents and a buildings claim in the past 3 years

Does it definitely need replacing? Can it wait? I ask because when we moved here I thought the roof might need replacing and the roofie who came out to repair a couple of tiles and point said he expected our ugly concrete tiles to last another 40-50 years.. I appreciate the flat roof part might - we have a flat rood part and it will need replacing in next five years they only have a 10-15 year lifespan.

post10651600] Yeah a buddy of mine told me that its not wise for someone ( Like me ) to climb on this roof with the pitch that it is at... You are kidding you have a valley going almost to the peak and the two outside sections ar at a different level giving youthe main roof as a handrail.. plus it is a new roof which will not flake off under your feet
