THE YELLOW RIVER CONFLICT OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 1937 By early October in 1937 the Qing Empire had seen Chen s Huang Line Plan come to fruition providing a more easily defended base line from which to launch the liberation of China.. There were now 10 divisions being trained and equipped in parallel with a view to a total of around 200 divisions in the army by the end of 1939. Back in the present with the loss of Shanxi s army many forts along the front line were woefully under-defended with Yunnan and Kwangsi reinforcements.. The most poorly manned city on the front line was Kaifeng which the Japanese duly attacked while Qing troops attacked the surrendered but unmanned town of Yuling

Compare the number of attacks the Qing made against the south versus the number of attacks it made against its various other neighbors for one thing; compare the number of troops involved for another.. First bringing an army out from the Qing homeland - Manchuria and northern China - to the far south was a logistical nightmare.. In those days this process took months of travel and preparation and was the sort of campaign that yielded little gains
