Hi MrsE - I made a lamb tagine last weekend with a red onion and pomegranate relish on the side (courtesy of Nigella!) It was delicious and not too oniony! Finely slice a red onion and steep it for about 30 mins in 4 tablespoons of lime juice and a slug of pomegranate juice (I was using this in the tagine anyway but think it would work with just lime juice too)

I got a Le Cruset tagine for my birthday and as it has a cast iron base it could be used both on the hob and in the oven

I cook tagines and Middle Eastern dishes fairly often and though I haven't cooked these particular Claudia Roden tagine recipes they look really good - I've never had a bad result from a Claudia Roden recipe yet.. Lamb Tagine - Tamarind & Saffron by Claudia Roden www.mybelazu.com/rec..

It looks as if the juice is providing the sweet and sour element often given by honey and preserved lemons used together in tagines

When I had tagines in Morocco they were served with either couscous or bread In N Africa usually there are veg in the starter (as it is a selection of little salads and so on meze style) so you don't need veg sides

I'd choose a recipe with plenty of vegetables in it rather than bother with side dishes
