Re: Marlin 981t or Marlin 60 ?

I wanted a .22 rifle mostly for plinking and occasional visits to the range and/or varmint control. I read online all the Ruger 10/22 vs Marlin 60 debates.. It seemed that it came down to Ruger can be made better with after-market support OR Marlin better out of the box.. In the end I made my choice based on availability of a Marlin 60 with traditional wood stock (I didn t want another plastic gun) at Wal-Mart one evening

I have both and am hard pressed to pick a favorite. The 981T has a scope on it and the model 60 doesn't. If I can see it I can hit it with 60. I just can't see it as far without the scope.. The 60 stays in my truck with a supply of ammo just in case I go somewhere that I can do a little plinking

I am sitting in a similar boat to tightgrouper. My Marlin 60SB has been such an excellent .22 rifle that I recommend it to anyone.. Mine as the tubular magazine and while it does take a little longer to load versus a detachable magazine it makes up for it with unerring reliability.. My only problem with it is that complete dis-assembly is tedious (when you are doing a thorough cleaning of receiver and action)

i have had both... the 60 is a great range rifle due to mag capacity and ease of reloading but i did drop it once and the front cap flew off with the spring cant say that would ever happen with the mag clips even though the 795 is more difficult to load i would prefer it in the field...

I recently bought this rifle from another forum member. And I really like it ! Talking with a serious Marlin guy he informed me that there is probably collector interest in this model.. I am looking strictly for a specific trade my Marlin 36G for any one of the many variations of Marlin model 39 s out there

Gunsmiths are for wussies. Far better to become handy with basic tools and DIY That and I'm just too cheap to pay anyone else to work on sometihng that should be fixable with enough time & elbow grease

Or for slightly more you can get a Savage with the accu trigger for $400 or so at Walmart with a cheap Simmons scope.. The Marlin seems to have a trigger very similar to the accu trigger and be cheaper too so that's a plus for it
