Funky Selection Question

Can I select a "box" of text? For example if I had a spreadsheet only in a text document could I select a few columns and delete them? Or replace them? I think something like this can be done in windows with the alt key

Many seem to have problems with getting ALT to work as Meta in GNU Emacs when used in xterm (that is in -nw mode)
