is it safe to uninstall HAL in ubuntu 10.04 and 9.10?

at this point in time in the alpha world of lucid can I uninstall HAL from Ubuntu 10.04? i tried it on 9.10 2 weeks ago and unfortunately the dependencies also uninstalled the entire gnome desktop and many other essential things leaving me with a bulky

My partner & I are seriously considering taking a transatlantic next year on the Noordam.We are willing to consider other cruise lines but really like HAL's itinerary and the timing of the cruise works out really well for us

I recently tried to book the New England Canada cruise on the Maasdam May 14 would you believe Hal refused my booking "this cruise is not available to solo travelers" at this time

Given recent news that Lynx will no longer use HAL (Ubuntu's Hardware Abstraction Layer) I'm concerned that there will be no functional replacement for the Wacom drivers
